In Devil’s Defense: A Fischer at Law Novel, a legal thriller by Lori B. Duff, Coach Wishingham felt it would be best to have a woman represent him in a paternity suit, so he recruited Jessica Fischer, the only female lawyer in the small Georgian town of Ashton. Sarah James, the petitioner, claimed that Coach was her daughter's father and requested that he pay past and current child support as well as her health insurance. Coach agreed to pay child support from now on, but that was how far his involvement with his daughter would go. Coach flatly refused to meet her or to have visiting rights. Jessica had the responsibility of ensuring Coach looked good in public, but it was challenging given her developing relationship with a local reporter.
Devil’s Defense by Lori B. Duff is a roller coaster ride of legal battles, romance, and intimidation. It is fast-paced and hard to put down. I kept turning the pages as quickly as I could because I had to know what would happen next. The characters were authentic and relatable. The coach was arrogant and full of himself, but it was later clear that there was more to him than I thought. Bobby is the local reporter who is a nice guy and a potential love interest for Jessica. It was easy to get to know him, and I enjoyed the budding romance between him and Jessica. This thriller was masterfully written, and I was hooked from the start until the end. The book is an enjoyable read, and the themes blend well together.
