I have read many books about leadership, but among the best is Developing Coaching Leaders: The Fundamentals and Techniques that Make Leaders Extraordinary by Scott Clancy. The title suggests it is about coaching but it truly is a book about both leadership and coaching. This is not a book that focuses on lecturing on leadership, but one where the author shares his successes as well as his failures to illustrate the important points. We hear stories from his military service as well as coaching his son’s basketball team to provide lessons in leadership. The book is in three parts consisting of Fundamentals; Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures; and Prove It!

Fundamentals starts with the most important foundational element, trust, as a leader who doesn’t have trust from their team makes it harder for a successful team to form. In Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures, the author discusses techniques for coaching such as mentoring, dealing with wins and losses, and assessing leaders while discussing recognition. However many of the leadership areas cross over into coaching as well in providing feedback, prioritization, setting intentions, and challenging aspirational goals. Once again, there are so many good stories that cement the lessons and the chapters provide a place for self-reflection. In Prove It!, the author takes the concepts in the first two sections and relates them together. Even more important, he begins asking us to think more about the concepts presented throughout the book, making us think about how we can use them to be effective leaders and coaches. This section does an excellent job of bringing it all together. Developing Coaching Leaders by Scott Clancy contains so many wonderful principles and stories that it is worth a second and third read. I highly recommend this wonderful book on leadership!
