Detours in Time by Pamela Schloesser Canepa is a captivating sci-fi novel that begins with the introduction of the two main characters, Milton Braddock and Tabitha "Pinky" Hanson. Pinky's reference to him as "Doc Brad Doc" sets the mood of their banter quickly, and instantly reminded me of Back to the Future. Especially since Milt's time machine is a car that requires roughly the same speed to breach the selected time barrier. Pinky is an artist who was hired as an assistant to Milton when she was taking classes in college. When they embark on a journey into the year 2047, they find out that the US had gone through a second Civil War. And as you can expect, there are many changes in culture, including the use of flying automobiles. When accessing the internet, Milton looks up his own name and finds out about his future. An event happens to a casual meeting of a friend in the future, later that same afternoon, and when something goes amiss, they try to go back to fix the problem before it starts.
Canepa does an outstanding job of moving the plot along with vivid images that really bring this story to life. The banter between Milt and Pinky is always light-hearted as their relationship progresses. Canepa's description of the two future years they visit, 20 and 50 years ahead, helps the reader through this well told adventure with terms we know such as "swipe, and text." Detours in Time is such an appropriate name for this fast moving sci-fi adventure as Pinky and Milt come to terms with their own lives, both now and in the future. Pamela Schloesser Canepa ends this novel with the perfect set up for her next installment. I thoroughly enjoyed this entertaining masterpiece on all levels. Smart and witty, with a little bit of chivalry thrown in for good measure. Brava! Encore!
