Jaelle Keyes's fantasy story, Destiny’s A Witch, introduces us to a post-apocalyptic world where a young woman shoulders the responsibility of protecting a group of younger children. Raven uses the survival skills her father taught her to provide for the needs of the group and to keep them a step ahead of Pratt’s human trafficking ring. During her nightly scouting, she manages to grow her group by adding three Lykos children. While scouting, the discovery of an injured young man, Orion, seems to alter Raven’s feelings of distrust. When Prince Orion recovers from his injury, he immediately falls in love with his savior and attempts to prove that she is his soulmate. Orion promises to help Raven get the children to the safety of Summer Veil. Can Raven learn to trust anyone, despite the horrendous betrayals she had experienced that placed her in peril?

I was able to fall in love with the fantasy world that Jaelle Keyes crafted. I cheered Raven on when she stood against her adversaries. The amount of responsibility that she carried felt like the world had fallen on her shoulders, and Destiny’s A Witch gave me Raven’s raw feelings without a filter. Her infatuation with Orion felt real since she didn’t understand how quickly her feelings developed. Orion came across as extremely cocky, but I expected that from a Fae Prince able to perform shielding spells and move faster than anyone could see. I enjoyed the suspense elements that ranged from feelings of being followed, the missing children, and the slow burn of not knowing if Raven would indulge in her feelings. I thought it was an interesting twist to have mythical beings interacting with human beings. My only disappointment was that I reached the end of the book. However, a climactic scene promised a sequel that would hold the same intensity. I look forward to more character development as the roles of Raven and her followers will definitely grow dramatically. I recommend any adult that likes a suspense-filled fantasy novel to read Destiny’s A Witch.

Destiny’s a Witch by Jaelle Keyes takes the reader on a hair-raising, breathtaking adventure. The story begins in a fallen world where danger lurks around every corner, quite literally. The main character is strong, determined, and thrust into leadership despite all odds. Reeling from loss and facing the reality that she is being hunted, the main character must decide if she will carry on with the mission set before her. A second world is introduced shortly into the story and the reader is beckoned to wait with anticipation for the two worlds to collide, for love to take hold, and for magic to unfold. Each part of this story presents a fascinating look into the worlds of the two primary characters. The author adds mystery into this fantasy and romance that will blossom even when it seems the most unlikely possibility.

The pacing of Destiny’s a Witch by Jaelle Keyes is very good. The descriptions of the inner thoughts and feelings of the characters keep the reader emotionally invested in the story and bring the characters to life. The vivid visuals set the stage for the reality of life for the main characters and demonstrate the power of attraction and true love, despite the improbability of it. I appreciate how the author keeps the action going even when the two love interests meet, and holds true to the world created in the opening chapters. The author weaves surprise and intrigue into the plot, causing the reader to cheer for the main character in her quest to save the innocents and bring them all to a place of refuge.
