Dependence by author Sue Noye Clark is set in London in the 1970s. It is the story of Anna and Fitz, their love and progress as a young couple, and their struggle with the boy’s drug addiction. At first, Anna’s understanding of this world is overshadowed by her love for Fitz, and she thinks she can handle everything else that their relationship will bring. Her optimistic self helps her create the beautiful illusion of normal life, especially since he seems to really want to give up his bad habits. Unfortunately, things don’t work like that in an addict’s life, and Fitz's reality soon turns into a bigger nightmare than before, throwing Anna’s hopes and optimistic attitude out the window.
Dependence is an emotional story, not only because its two story lines are in such a visible antithesis, their love and his addiction, but also because it is very true to real life and true to the emotions that people feel when having to deal with such unfortunate events. To say that drug addiction is tricky would be an understatement; there are obstacles that love can’t conquer; there are sufferings that can tear people apart, no matter the strong connection that they might have; and there are actions that have consequences far beyond our wildest imagination. Sue Noye Clark’s book does a wonderful job in addressing these issues while keeping the story line interesting and the reader engaged. Love is strong, but unfortunately drugs have a much stronger power so will Anna and Fitz make it or will their love be torn apart by his addiction?
