Demolition Daredevil by Max Parrott is the fifth book in the Ruff McPaw Mysteries. Angela never says no to a mystery. A car accident raises all sorts of questions and Angela begins to wonder if it was truly an accident. Lending her sleuthing talents to Chief Helbar, she sets out to prove if foul play was involved but then an explosion wrecks a pesticide company. ProFarm seems innocent on the surface but as Angela delves deeper behind the scenes, she realizes there is more here than meets the eye. When she rescues a gerbil in the aftermath of the explosion, she rushes it to the vet, in the hope of saving it, and soon finds that it holds a key that will set her on the path to uncovering a dangerous plot.
Angela returns with her adorable dog Ruff for another engaging and exciting mystery. Their dynamic just gets better and better with each installment. It’s endearing to see the bond between human and pet at the center of the mystery, providing heart and levity when it’s needed most. Ruff serves as a delightful sidekick, accompanying Angela as she investigates and providing her with a constant source of comfort. His presence always makes you smile and easily lifts the story’s tone. The different relationships in Angela’s life strike a nice balance to the mystery elements with her romance progressing at a good pace. She and David have a genuine, loving dynamic that has authentically grown. The mystery weaves in a commentary regarding animal rights that author Max Parrott always does so well. From the car accident to the explosion at ProFarm, the twists keep you guessing until Angela finds the answers. The animal at the center of it all is an adorable little gerbil found in the wreckage, an important clue that impacts what Angela discovers. This series continues to blend murder, mystery, and animal rights, and Parrott’s particular charm turns Demolition Daredevil into a delightful treat that’s sure to please.
