Delta by Jordan Hallak takes the reader to a small town in New York state at the beginning of the 20th century. The main character is Lottie, a young teenager who is also the narrator. She lives with her family, the Madisons, in the town of Delta. Lottie’s family at first seems normal enough, yet as the story progresses her parents and some of her siblings seem to be hiding something from her. We also are introduced to Aunt Flora, who lives on Craven Land in Delta in an old brick house. Flora cannot leave her house because of an unexplained illness and must rely on someone delivering food to her each day. Lottie is given this task by her mother, who warns her never to enter the house on her visits.
Author Jordan Hallak based her novel on the history of Lake Delta through the eyes of Lottie whose young world is not quite what she thought it was. Now a state park, Lake Delta is close to where the author grew up. She gives a good description of the small town and the people in it. As Lottie grows up, we learn that the population of Delta will have to relocate because the state will be building a new dam and the area where the town is will be flooded. The tension and changes it brings to Lottie, the nickname for “Ottilie”, all seem to lead to something, but what? There is talk of magic that is hinted at throughout the story and its connection to Lottie and her family. Reality at times seems to be blurred. Delta is an intriguing work of fiction based on historical events. Enjoy.
