Delilah is a Tiger by Jemima Neal features a wonderfully playful protagonist who has decided she is a tiger. But not just any tiger - - she is fierce, strong, beautiful, and a host of other self-affirming adjectives that any youngster might aspire to possess. When Delilah tells her first-grade teacher she is a tiger and then crawls under the desk; her acting has gone too far. A trip to the zoo to see a real tiger gives Delilah the bittersweet reality of an endangered species. Delilah ‘hears’ the tiger, who encourages her to continue embracing her tiger and to rule with a kind heart. She also dreams of her adventures with the tiger.
Beautiful illustrations by Anastasiya Benzel resemble watercolor pencils. Delilah is simply delightful with her makeup stripes and her tiger socks. Each full-page illustration showcases Delilah embracing her inner tiger, and the mixed reactions of her family and teacher. The color palette chosen for the story, with beautiful pinks and purples, and rich browns and greens, enriches the setting - both in the real world and Delilah's imagination. It is clear that Benzel’s art complements the story well. Jemima Neal has written a timeless story that transcends young Delilah’s playing tiger. In this story, the tiger claims an active role in Delilah’s thoughts. The book gently introduces protecting wildlife and the environment in a way that is not political. The text uses simple, audience-appropriate language and welcomes beginning and advanced readers alike. Delilah is a Tiger should appeal to both boys and girls.
