Deidre's Dawn: Book 1 of The Enchantment by J. Michael McFadden is the story of Deidre Dawn, set against the backdrop of ancient Ireland. Deirdre’s curiosity and enchantment unfolded while reading the Book of Invasions – a saga of the transformation of her land where it spoke about the changes in the courses of rivers, the spawning of mountains, and the rise of steep seaside cliffs. She never realized how reading about Irish folklore would take her to the greatest challenge of her life. It was the midsummer eve of the first millennium year which changed her belief that these stories were made-up tales ... when she and her friend Culain became a part of the lore. The story gains momentum when these two friends are drawn into a magical and whimsical world as they try to escape from their abusive families. It is a story about friendship, love, self-discovery, adventure, and magic.
Children will be drawn into the whimsicality of the Enchanted Forest as they come across delightful creatures and moments in life which enable them to define their characters and personalities. The magic of the woods is palpable to young readers due to the author’s vivid descriptions and keen eye for details. The secret behind the identity of Deidre and Culain is another interesting aspect of the story. The mythical and magical elements of Irish folklore run through the story as Deidre narrates her tale of adventure. All the characters are well defined and they complement the main characters of Deidre and Culain. The author’s fluidity when it comes to expression gives good pace and movement to the plot.
