Deep From the Heart by Mary Lou Cheatham is a contemporary Christian novel about a female minister named Ava who finds herself in a new state, Texas, in a new church, Grace and Peace, with new people around who don't exactly give off vibes of grace or peace. She encounters some colorful, memorable characters, and some challenging situations to say the least. When Ava meets a man named Jack she isn't sure she can trust, things turn darker in her world as he begins to stalk her. She is trying to make a difference in the church, to reach out to needy people and bring cultures together in the name of Christianity. She tries to serve God, her new congregation, and community the best way she knows how, but Ava comes up against barriers right and left. Can she overcome these barriers and find happiness? Or love?
I really enjoyed the character of Ava. She seems so realistic and honest, and the other characters stand out in the book as well. I also like how she tries to stay true to her calling and treats people according to the teachings of Jesus Christ. This is a love story with a theme of immigration but isn't preachy about it. It's real, moving, and inspirational. As you read, you will definitely keep turning pages to find out how she does in the romance department. In Deep From the Heart, Mary Lou Cheatham has created an entertaining but meaningful story that has social relevance today.
