Deep Disinformation by Ashley Parker Owens examines how artificial intelligence can create disingenuous news, videos, and photos, how these fake or manipulated items can deceive those who read or view them, and what that means for today’s world. Chapter titles include Who Creates Disinformation, How Does AI Work?, Disinformation and Democracy, Detecting Fakes, and eight more. The book is well-researched and comprehensive, but for those who want to learn more, it also includes extensive lists of resources, including news articles, YouTube videos, podcasts, and websites, such as a list of those that can help users determine if the content has been generated by artificial intelligence. The book concludes with two glossaries of all terms relating to artificial intelligence. Owens is a self-described AI enthusiast, and she writes with an unbiased mind about the topic.
Deep Disinformation by Ashley Parker Owens is a fascinating look into the world of artificial intelligence, especially how it’s used to deceive people and manipulate information. It’s also an excellent analysis of the current state of affairs in the online world. It’s safe to say that I learned more about AI and its power to do harm while reading this book than by reading or watching everything else that I have on the topic. When I was working as a journalist I would have found this information extremely valuable, so I recommend it to current journalists because they deal every day with the terms that the author defines and discusses so well. But the book is not only an excellent resource about AI. It also serves as a warning and wake-up call about the power of AI to threaten our democracy and lifestyles as we know them. I highly recommend this superb book to anyone who has an interest in artificial intelligence.
