In Deathly Ticket to Spain by Donna Bashaw, childhood friends Agatha Johnson and Dorothy Collins had so many adventures planned since their retirement. As they pack for their first trip together since moving into their retirement complex, they cannot wait to see what Spain, Morocco, and Portugal have to offer. As they board the plane to begin their holiday with Envy Travel, they meet other travel members, including Robbie, a loud, overbearing misogynist. By the time they arrive in Spain, they discover Robbie has died on the plane. Everyone believes that his death was from natural causes until other mysterious deaths and accidents occur. Agatha contacts her neighbor, a retired detective now police consultant, to find out more about the other tour members. They discover that some members of the tour party haven't been totally honest. There is only one way to solve this mystery. Agatha has a plan to flush out the killer, but will it work?
I instantly fell in love with Agatha and Dorothy; their love of life and adventure was amazing. They shared such a warm and supportive friendship, and both are quite fearless when it comes to danger, especially Agatha. Each of the characters was superb, and everyone had an air of mystery around them which made for such an intriguing plot. The murders could have been carried out by any member of the tour party. There are many cryptic clues and red herrings cleverly scattered throughout which kept me totally enthralled and on the edge of my seat. There were great moments of suspense and tension but also fantastic pockets of humor too; the scene with the missing camel was so funny. The historical references and landscapes of Spain, Morocco, and Portugal were described wonderfully. I felt I was actually there with the two ladies. I especially loved Toledo and Gibraltar. The recipes and travel tips at the end of each chapter were a unique but welcome addition for me. Jake and Agatha's relationship was also quite endearing. I hope he makes another appearance in Donna's next novel when the ladies travel to Russia. Deathly Ticket to Spain by Donna Bashaw was an incredibly enjoyable read.
