Death on Duchess Street (Detective Hodgins Victorian Murder Mysteries Book 2) is a well written, old fashioned horse and buggy era mystery. Death on Duchess Street is not short on suspects and any one of them had a good motive for killing young Olivia. Detective Hodgins is given the responsibility of finding the killer and bringing him to justice. Hodgins has to travel by buggy or train to track down the possible killer and does whatever it takes to solve the case, including getting stabbed. As each suspect is introduced, I was sure he was the one, except I missed the one who actually committed the crime. Is it the father, the neighbor, or the traveling salesman? Each had a motive and each had a reasonable alibi. Hodgins interrogates, investigates, and pieces together all of the events before he confronts the killer and gets him to confess.
Nanci Pattenden has created a very likeable, shrewd detective who has a great future ahead of him in solving crimes. Death on Duchess Street is book 2, but it stands alone as an excellent Victorian murder/mystery. I am so looking forward to reading future stories about Detective Hodgins. The killer’s identity was a surprise and one I did not see coming. I particularly enjoyed how Hodgins trapped the killer into admitting what he had done; it was devious and clever. All mystery fans will enjoy Death on Duchess Street and instantly become a Detective Hodgins/Nanci Pattenden fan; I certainly did.
