There are immortals living among ordinary humans, hidden and blended well into society. However, their concealed existence is disturbed by the death of one of their own. They called him The Wanderer; a mentor, mystic and a friend who was brutally murdered. They gather in New York and pay their respects to The Wanderer, some vowing to avenge his death. Shockingly, their gathering is interrupted by the murderer himself, who kills another immortal and gleefully promises more death before fleeing. Time is of the essence, something that the hidden ones have not been subjected to for centuries. Together, immortals and mortals will discover that the conflict is deeply rooted in the past.
Mostly set in New York, the premise of Death of an Immortal by Christopher Roche is intriguing, and the immortals themselves are unique, determined by the way they achieved immortality and retained it. Readers will definitely recognize a number of historical figures in the story. In a moderately paced tale, Roche excellently mixes legends, biblical and historical facts with fictionalized accounts which develop into background stories of the characters and provide structure for the story line. This paves the way for several interesting plot twists. Even though I didn’t strongly gravitate to any characters, their roles are well established enough to move the plot forward. The ending is slightly abrupt for my taste but perhaps a sequel is in the works. All in all, the solid concept and premise of Roche’s Death of an Immortal make it an interesting read for fans of the genre.
