Death by Didgeridoo (A Jamie Quinn Mystery) by Barbara Venkataraman has all the elements of a perfect mystery. The victim is an unlikable rock star with more enemies than friends. An aging drummer, Spike, has a music store and teaches music. When he is found dead in his store, all of the evidence points to one of Spike’s music students, Adam. Adam is a young man with Asperger's Syndrome who is found standing over the dead body, apologizing. The death weapon? An Australian musical instrument called a didgeridoo. Enter Jamie Quinn, the reluctant heroine who is recovering from her mother’s death – and is not at all interested in pursuing her career as an attorney. However, she is pulled into this case because the fragile Adam is her nephew. Jamie must untangle the mystery and protect Adam from a legal system that might destroy him.
In Death by Didgeridoo (A Jamie Quinn Mystery), Barbara Venkataraman has created a compelling cast of characters that populate an intriguing story. We learn just enough about Jamie to want another ‘Jamie Quinn Mystery’. Duke, the private investigator that Jamie hires to collect evidence for her, is a great character who is a wonderful foil for Jamie’s wit and intelligence. The dialogue between the two is smart and moves the story forward. The character of Adam presents an accurate picture of how a person with Asperger's Syndrome might react in this sort of situation. Death by Didgeridoo is a very good read – and makes me anxious to read the next in the series!
