Having a second chance at life is always a great opportunity, especially if it means coming back from the dead! That’s what happens to Maxine Logan in Death Benefits by Sharon Saracino. Max is at a fairly low point in her life when she slips and falls in the shower. Unfortunately for her, an over-eager Grim Reaper in Training cuts her life off before her time is really up. Maxine uses her wits and convinces Marvin Jenks, the clerk in the Office of Central Processing, to let her return to the living and take the temporarily vacant position of Superintendent of Spiritual Impediment. This leads to comic and touching encounters with ghosts who have unfinished business, but it also opens Max’s eyes to the state of her own soul. Max learns to open her heart that has been closed since before her divorce and to look for the good in people. What she discovers is pretty surprising and the changes that begin to occur lead the way to new understandings.
With tremendous humor and a sharp wit, Sharon Saracino offers a look at what soul searching is all about in Death Benefits. Nothing like death to open your eyes to what life is all about! Engaging and well-written, this story is full of insight into the reaction many people have to hurt and betrayal while also highlighting the basic good they possess deep inside. Death Benefits gives you the chance to laugh, cry and cheer as Max works through her ‘assignment’ as temporary SSI and discovers a lot about herself in the process.
