Dear Mr. Wasn't Me is a humorous children’s picture book written by Laura Jensen-Kimball and illustrated by Peter Mahr. The mom in this story was not at all happy with the way her morning started. It was a Saturday after all, and she had been hoping to sleep in at least until 9:00 A.M., but no, it wasn’t meant to be. Her dreams were interrupted by shrill shouts of “Mom, it wasn’t me.” She knew what those dreaded words meant. There was trouble, loads of it, just waiting for her to discover. She dragged herself out of bed, only to trip and fall on toys left beside it. Rushing down the stairs, she stumbled over more toys and discovered her naked littlest boy at the bottom. How did he end up there? Where were his clothes? One child accounted for, she wondered where the other three might be, and then she heard those words again.
Laura Jensen-Kimball’s Dear Mr. Wasn't Me features a mom who’s heard those words too many times. Caregivers and young listeners alike will giggle a bit as they read this funny story about the mischief kids can get into and the often-heard refrain that has this mom writing a letter. Peter Mahr’s illustrations are brightly colored and work perfectly to bring the harried mom and her four children to brilliant life. Each picture is filled with details to explore and appreciate. A grand selection for storytime, this offering is also suitable for young readers to try on their own. Dear Mr. Wasn't Me is highly recommended.
