In Dear Gosei: A Young Man Confronting His Past by Jorge Bosch, the author has written about a very sensitive subject, not only for the LGBTQ+ community but for any youngsters growing up in today’s society. Nobody wants to talk about sexuality to their children and leaves it up to teachers in schools and churches. Many people hide what happens because it will bring shame to the family and they will have to stop their busy lives to attend to the matter and take the child to counselling. Prestige and their standing in society often count for more than fixing problems in a family. We still live in a society that would rather hide problems than confront them and sort them out.
Jorge Bosch wrote Dear Gosei through the eyes of John Hattori, who is a Gosei, which is a 5th-generation immigrant of Japanese descent. The author brings to life in the most soul-searching way what John feels. Readers learn how he has to cope with the fact that twenty years before he was born, events started and culminated with him being the final victim of abuse both physically and emotionally at the age of 14. The author writes one of the most encouraging stories for any youngster or anyone struggling to work through a situation. Each of the characters must face the consequences of their actions. The ending is most unexpected but brings calm to the reader's soul after a heart-wrenching journey with John, which at times will make the reader cry. This book is well worth more than one read and is extremely well written.
