Durwood Oak Jones regularly posts ads on Soldier of Fortune to look for injustices he can solve. Sometimes there's almost none, but sometimes the response is so overwhelming that it's hard for him to pick which case to take. In Dear Durwood, he selects the letter belonging to Carol Bridges, the mayor of Chickasaw, Texas. According to her letter, she is afraid of the upcoming shift in Hogan Consolidated's organizational structure. The industrial manufacturing giant has been the source of livelihood and income of the locals for a very long time. Now that it's about to be sold by the Hogan family to a bunch of lawyers and businessmen who do not seem to care for the locals they would be laying off, it is natural for the mayor and Durwood to have huge concerns and investigate.
Jeff Bond's Dear Durwood is the second installment in the Third Chance Enterprises series. Durwood's character and the world-building are written well. The imagery appeals to the senses as if readers are there inside the book, experiencing the story first-hand. It has a light but serious tone and a sense of humor but Jeff Bond also knows when to get down to business. At first, this appears to be a simple sleuthing tale but as the story progresses, the author reveals its complexity and depth. The coming together of these events makes everything more exciting and shows Bond's dexterity in his craft. With a feminist touch, it's refreshing to see Carol not only as Durwood's love interest but also as an equal partner. Dear Durwood combines thrilling action, mystery, and slow-burn romance as it tackles social issues.
