In her book Dead In The Water, Donna Collins introduces us to ex-boxer now crime scene investigator Jason Wade, who is dispatched to a dead body that has washed up on the banks of the River Thames. On arrival, his superiors and colleagues alike advise him not to investigate the dead body, but he senses something is not right and ignores the advice. When he sees the body, he sees nothing but a murder when all around him try to convince him it’s just a tragic accident. What he sees sends him spiraling out of control and into a long period of drinking and violence as he tries to gather evidence to prove it was murder, but his behavior threatens his career. Later, Jason is sent to take the fingerprints of a young woman suspected of attempting suicide by jumping into the River Thames. She survives but has amnesia, and is unable to remember who she is, where she is from, or how she got there. Follow Jason as he believes the two incidents are connected while all around him are saying there is no connection.
Donna Collins brings together murder, informants, police corruption, drugs, explosions, and an assassin in this action-packed book, leaving you not knowing which direction the story will take as different characters are introduced. The author takes time to develop the relationship between the different characters and Jason as the story is played out. You are left wondering if they will help Jason in his quest for justice or hinder him. The style of writing keeps you on the edge of your seat as he develops emotions of anger, frustration, anxiety, and excitement. The chase through London gives a hint of a romantic connection between Jason and the girl suffering from amnesia, Kate Caldwell. The twist and turns will have you wondering what the outcome will be. An excellent, well-written book, and very enjoyable to read.
