A killer is on the run in the exciting murder mystery, Dead Air (Beyond the Mic Mysteries Book 2) by Laurie Fagen. In the evenings, Lisa writes and produces a 1940s private eye podcast. During the day, she is a crime reporter for Chandler's News radio station KWLF. One hot July night, a little after midnight, Lisa is awakened by the police scanner sitting near her bed; there's been a shooting. She races to the other side of town. Once at the scene, Lisa finds that while responding to a routine call, two officers were gunned down by a male suspect. Both officers died, and their killer is still at large. In the meantime, Lisa is working on a cold case. Fifteen years ago, a four-year-old was assaulted, and the perpetrator is still at large. Lisa has assisted the police in the past and successfully helped them close several cases. A few of those times, she found herself in some precarious situations. Lisa resolves to make a difference to the grieving and frightened victims, and bring a pedophile and a cop killer to justice. Following her instincts, Lisa begins investigating on her own. Will she find the suspect? Or will he locate her first?

The sensational novel Dead Air by Laurie Fagen has the unique element of having a story within a story. Folded within the plot is a brilliant 1940s noir radio podcast. Ms. Fagen's professional talent shines through the beautifully written excerpts. Although they are very engaging and superbly written, they have an incongruous effect on the storyline. The process of writing the news for a radio program is depicted well. I came away from the story more knowledgeable about the production side of radio broadcasting and with increased respect for reporters. With an enthralling storyline and memorable characters, fans of amateur sleuth and noir mysteries will love this series!
