"Her feet meet the ground, and she takes her stance in front of Xavgon as he lowers his head and smoke protrudes from his snout. The sight of peering men and women in uniform engulfs her. All she has known from her world is depression, anxiety, stress, and grief—but not today." In Dawn of the Dragon, Book Two of The Dawn fantasy series by A.H. Washington, Kalera and her dragon Xavgon are stranded in modern-day New Orleans, forced into a standoff against the police and military. They need to find their way back fast before Ager the tyrant regains full control of the Zaylen Realm and gets his hands on four valuable dragon eggs. With the help of her friends, they search for an ancient portal but Kalera fears that their enemy is gaining the upper hand as time ticks away.
The poem "My Dragon, The Revival" by Ivor Steven gives a marvelous opening for Dawn of the Dragon. As the story is set in an expansive fantasy realm and modern-day earth, it gives ample room for A.H. Washington to realize the intriguing premise for the second installment of The Dawn series. With solid story development, the principal elements of dragons and magic substantially fill the fast-paced plot with suspense and action, balanced with the relatable characters' emotions. Despite her flaws and her dark past, Kalera is courageous and her bond with her dragon, Xavgon, is interesting and complex, adding depth to the plot. The story is standalone enough for new readers of the series to enjoy and immerse themselves in a dark but captivating adventure. Overall, another commendable tale from A.H. Washington.
