Dash and Cinder by Bridget Ladd is a steampunk re-imagining of Cinderella that takes away the fairy godmother and adds a robotic chef, sets it firmly in India, and turns Cinderella into an android living under the harsh ownership of Madame and her callous and cruel daughters. Prince Charming, Dashnu, or Dash, also works as an engineer, and is an Indian prince searching desperately for her. But time is running out for Cinder, as the special oil she needs to function is expensive and very hard to come by. She is slowly dying, but she hopes to attend the Festival of Lights before that day comes. Told from both Dash and Cinder's point of view, Dash and Cinder by Bridget Ladd is a sweet novella that takes an old story and gives it an interesting twist.
Admittedly, as I was first reading Dash and Cinder, I thought it had a similar premise to Cinder by Marissa Meyer. While it does have similarities, as the story progressed I was quickly sucked in by the characters and the unique steampunk world that Ladd created. The story was very engaging, though since it's a novella sometimes things progressed faster than I expected, making me wish that the story would go on longer than it did. Hopefully Ladd eventually creates a longer story for these two characters as they are very intriguing and I would love to find out more about them. Great for any fan of steampunk and re-imagined fairy tales.
