One night, James Decker gets killed while saving a young girl. Problem is, he doesn't stay dead--he's an Eternal--and starts seeing all sorts of supernatural beings, including the ghosts of his dead grandpa, his long-dead dad, and his dead girlfriend. The young girl he saved, Alex, turns out to be the daughter of a shapeshifter and a Sensitive. She also happens to be an Innocent, the embodiment of Hope, and needs to be protected against evil creatures who want to corrupt her and, in the process, destroy hope for all humanity. While Decker navigates the rules of the supernatural world and learns the ropes of being an Eternal, he and his new-found friends — a shapeshifter, a vampire, an ogre, a bard, and a troll — go on a dangerous adventure to save the Innocent and save the world.
"Darkside" is a fun and interesting fantasy. The writing is smart, witty, funny, and so unlike most fantasies these days that it's refreshing. The story flows easily and in a very fast pace. You also have a diverse and interesting cast of characters. The story is told from the perspective of the main character, James Decker, who is a very likeable protagonist. His odd assortment of friends are very different from each other and are likeable in their own ways. This makes things even more interesting. There isn’t a dull moment during the entire book. Although I would have liked to see a few more back stories about the supernatural world, the history of Eternals and the characters, the story was fun and enjoyable enough.
