Darkness Eternal by Leslie Lee Sanders is a standalone novel connected to the Refuge trilogy. The events take place a century after the trilogy, and over a decade after the standalone novel, Resurfaced. Connor is a cadet at the facility, daydreaming about the Refuge Inc. history, and about his best friend, Vince. His world has a very strict set of rules, and plans for the future. His feelings don’t exactly count as part of the ‘higher plan.’ When the cadets are awakened in the middle of the night, Connor doesn’t expect Vince to run headlong into the heart of it. When Connor goes after Vince, he discovers secrets that will either save his world or destroy it.
Though connected to the Refuge trilogy, Darkness Eternal can be read on its own. A few connections to the past are made, but they’re explained. As a dystopian novel, there are dark currents throughout the story, but Connor has a spark that lightens it. He has a laid-back demeanor that balances the darkness of the world. He’s full of heart, and wants to do the right thing. As the hero of the story, he’s easy to relate to and root for. The events toward the end move quickly as everything is revealed and implodes. It’s a novel that you can’t put down until it’s finished. The characters are flawed but endearing. Connor is adorable and a strong heroic lead. The villain of the story isn’t surprising, but that doesn’t make the horror of what is done any less. Leslie Lee Sanders delivers a thought provoking story with romance, heart, action, and hope, everything that makes a dystopian future worth saving.
