In Dark Luminance, a sci-fi novel by E. M. McDowell, Mackland, a Marine vet, heads a science crew working on creating new reusable energy by using the space between universes. When a test of theirs goes awry, Mackland and his friends Billy, Sean, and Lily, find themselves sucked into an alternate universe not much different than their own. But it's the little things that make all the difference. This new universe has suffered a recent zombie outbreak, also known as the Psidead, the side-effect of the latest street drug. Mackland and his friends must fix the broken device, dodge hungry zombies, and escape a maniacal survivalist leader who seems to be half zombie himself. If they manage to survive on their new Earth maybe, just maybe they can get back to their old one.
Dark Luminance is a very fast and easy read that grabs you from the beginning and refuses to let go. The kind of book that'd make for an awesome movie. It actually reminded me of the Pendragon series by D. J. MacHale, another universe-hopping book, but with a teen protagonist instead of an adult one. While zombies seem like the new vampires, liberally peppered in many books and movies, McDowell manages to add some new elements that make them stick out but still mesh with the overall story. Now I couldn't imagine the shuffling undead any other way. An enjoyable read with tons of actions that had me up late and wanting more. More!
