"Dark Days" by C.A. Kunz is the second in the 'Childe' series for young adults. We again meet Cat Colvin as she learns about her adoption and her unusual physiology as a half human/half vampire sixteen year old. Cat has a lot to contend with and her friends are not always keen to help. They have their own agendas and their own set of secrets which keep the reader wondering if there are any "normal" characters in the story.
Three young girls have been kidnapped and forced into the vampire world and they have an agenda to do Cat in for past perceived injustices - or just for the fun of it. They reek havoc on the community and take captive a local high school biology teacher for their "feeding" needs. Everything comes to a head when Cat must choose to remain at home in Astoria or join the coven in which she will be trained in the ways of the vampire world. She gets a real education when discovering the secret identities of her adoptive parents and her adoptive brother, all of whom must adhere to the covenants of their own unique group.
Although this book did not captivate my attention as did the first book, it was well worth the read simply to try to ascertain what teenagers will do in times of stress! The waxing and waning of loyalties and commitments was a joy to read as, despite the netherworld characteristics of most of the characters, their problems seem relevant to most of the reading audience.
