Danny’s Day In Heaven by Marie Antoinette Kelly is a beautifully written book for children explaining the concept of death in the most wonderful way. Death is not something that adults are inclined to speak to children about; we would much rather shelter them. But I have recently come across a child who had to face death twice in a matter of four months with a grandmother who passed and then a beloved aunt. Grief counseling was on offer at his school which was most unusual but appreciated. He and I read this book together and his face lit up, especially with all the vibrant illustrations that tell the story of Danny who loves to surf but gets caught up in a sudden storm when out on his surfboard, and what happens to him.
The pictures as well as the words combine to enliven the story in a way that a child can understand. There is a twist in the tale but that is for the young reader to discover. Marie Antoinette Kelly is the illustrator as well as the storyteller. She has drawn the most amazing pictures in a way that makes the words feel like an intricate part of the drawings and brings the events to life. I found that my young friend lingered on the drawings and seemed to absorb the feelings that each one presented in their own unique and vibrant way. Based on the true-life near-death experience of Dannion Brinkley, this is an outstanding book for children. Thank you, Marie Antoinette Kelly, for this amazing book.
