Damnation by Igor Valec is a Grimdark fantasy political drama. King Lortar is about to face his biggest battle yet – against his own son, the Crown Prince Asuf. Asuf wishes to marry Alerise, daughter and princess of the Kinslayer cult. On the way to ask for her hand in marriage, Asuf and his men are ambushed by the Brannstuners. Winning the battle they travel on but things might not be all they seem with Alerise. King Lortar appears to be surrounded on all sides by enemies, by those who wish to bring him down, and there seems little he can do about it. Betrayed by those he loved, can King Lortar triumph over evil or will Asuf win the war. And where does Vinrik, Lortar’s bastard son, stand?
Damnation by Igor Valec was an intense but exciting read. Although it was clearly a fantastical story, it read very much like a historical drama, telling of the battles of old between kings and clans. The opening scene of the story draws you straight into the action as you enter a bloody hunting scene and from there, it's all go. The characters are real people, the ‘horses’ are reitvulfs, and it really is action and adventure all the way. The story flits by chapter from one to another, drawing ever closer to an explosive ending. A great, original plot with plenty of twists and turns, this story moves at a fast pace with the suspense building all the way through. Highly recommended for fans of epic fantasy stories who want something just that little bit different.
