Dagril’s Gold is a work of fiction in the science fiction, adventure, and historical sub-genres, and was penned by author A. C. Phillips. In this short but jam-packed adventure, we find that our protagonists are not typical humans, but a highly advanced race that lives for many years more. The story spans a total of six centuries as these scientists find themselves stranded in Tuscany in 1347 CE, discovering the ways of these people, their cultures, and customs. But just as they settle into the way of living in this new world, the black death arrives, and everything they’ve come to know lies of the verge of pestilence, destruction, and death.
Author A. C. Phillips has crafted a fascinating science fiction adventure told from a familiar yet fresh perspective. The super-evolved humans of the story appear quite alien to us at first, but as their situation develops and we find them somewhat helpless, it becomes easier to root for them and support their endeavors. The depiction of 14th-century Tuscany is truly excellent, with highly immersive details and a really fascinating society and culture to explore. This results in an engaging and heartfelt story about real people and human fortitude, which is only made more exciting by the time jumps to near-present day and the dangers which the protagonists face as the book goes on. This well-crafted plot was very satisfying, and overall I would certainly recommend Dagril’s Gold to readers seeking immersive science fiction and historical genre-mashing.
