Cuckoo Clock - New York: Unbroken Bonds Book 3 by Elisabeth Marrion begins with the sale of an old clock in an antique shop, which fails to keep the time for a very good reason. It has a history dating back to when it was smuggled out of Germany in the late 1930s. We meet Dr. Ester Rosenthal, a devoted surgeon who flees to Britain with her father. Unknown to her, he has smuggled the clock in his backpack. Ester’s husband is imprisoned in the Dachau concentration camp and she has no idea if he is still alive. In England, Ester meets groups of children who have been rescued, and she helps build a school and tends to their health needs. Arriving in the United States, Ester is distraught to discover her eldest adopted son is missing after the Coventry aid raids, and against all odds, she returns to England to find him.
This is the first book I’ve ever read that covers the safe passage of Jewish German children to Britain to escape Hitler’s genocide policies against many of his own countrymen. Cuckoo Clock - New York: Unbroken Bonds Book 3 by Elisabeth Marrion is an easy-to-read book, and I learned many facts I’d not previously known about the hospitality offered to displaced Jewish orphans from Germany. I can imagine there was much research put into this historical period in England, both before and after World War II. The author includes many characters in her book, who are eventually split over two continents. The text flowed smoothly and it is an interesting take on a subject I thought I knew well, but Elisabeth Marrion has taught me a lot. Cuckoo Clock - New York is a good story, and I did enjoy the read.
