Dean Whitford’s Crossroads 2070 is a thought-provoking exploration of our potential futures, each narrated by a distinctive character living in the year 2070. Through the eyes of Sophia, Kesa, Willow Noah, Mason, and River, the book delves into contrasting visions of humanity’s destiny, grappling with pressing issues such as runaway climate change and the rise of advanced Artificial Intelligence. Readers are left to think about which of the three stories might become our future, if any. Despite its science-fiction nature, the book offers a stark reflection of the real possibilities of life 46 years from now and the world we are leaving for future generations.
Dean Whitford skillfully weaves together themes of resilience, collaboration, and the indomitable spirit of humanity. Crossroads 2070 serves as a cautionary tale and testament to the enduring hope that we can forge a brighter future even in dire circumstances. By presenting multiple perspectives, the author invites readers to contemplate the choices we make today that shape our destiny. As I read this, I thought about 46 years ago and how we’d react if we were given scenarios of cell phones, apps, and the internet controlling almost every aspect of life or a cashless society. So much would seem like science fiction in the 1970s that Whitford’s scenarios could be plausible. Whether we have a utopian or dystopian future, Crossroads 2070 gives us reason to pause and confront the issues of today and how they will shape the future. Whitford demonstrates narrative mastery with a thematic depth that remains long after the final page. An excellent read for anyone wanting a glimpse of future possibilities.
