Corrida by Anthony Pond is a captivating exploration of fear, risk, and self-discovery, centered on the journey of two friends, Grant and Ryan, as they travel to Pamplona, Spain, to participate in the legendary running of the bulls during the San Fermín festival. Grant is eager to dive into the thrill of the event, while Ryan is more reserved, feeling anxious about the potential dangers involved. As the two prepare for the run, Ryan ultimately decides to confront his fears and join Grant, even though his unease continues to grow. On the day of the run, however, Ryan gets separated from Grant and is swept up in the chaotic energy of the crowd. Though he manages to reach the arena safely, Grant is nowhere to be found. As the story unfolds, Ryan reflects on his experience, grappling with the tension between reckless abandon and thoughtful caution. This story leaves readers with a sense of open-ended curiosity, prompting them to contemplate the nature of fear, bravery, and friendship.
Corrida examines the balance between fear and courage. The pacing is excellent; the build-up to the run is deliberate and filled with anticipation. When the action finally kicks in, it is described with such intensity and vivid detail that I felt as though I was right there, running alongside Ryan. The sensory details—everything from the dust on the ground to the frantic energy of the crowd—immersed me in the moment, making the chaos feel incredibly real. I also appreciated how Anthony Pond skillfully crafted the contrast between Grant and Ryan. Grant’s carefree, almost reckless demeanor juxtaposed with Ryan's initial hesitance creates an intriguing dynamic. The story allowed me to form my own conclusions about which approach is more effective. The themes of confronting fears and the struggle between spontaneity and preparation are thoughtfully woven throughout. While the story doesn’t offer clear resolutions, this ambiguity adds to its charm—it feels true to life. I enjoyed it. Corrida is a rich, reflective story that lingers long after the last page is turned.
