As Sagebrush and the Butterfly Creek Flood opens, it’s harvest time. Sagebrush and the young ranchwoman are picking apples. During the summer, a forest fire took the trees and ground cover from the mountainside. Rain is now washing dirt into the river, pushing Mr. Hiker Man with them into the river, and flooding the escape route for the little people, known as Shuns, who are harvesting lettuce. The little people and the human cling to the lettuce. Mr. Hiker Man blows his whistle to summon help. Sagebrush, the puppy, hears it first and alerts the young ranchwoman. She gets her horse. Sagebrush gets his parents, and the four of them set out on a rescue mission. The hiker demands to be rescued first, setting off the moral crisis of the story.
A tailless dog and a young woman rancher team up for a sweet rescue effort in Sagebrush and the Butterfly Creek Flood: Corky Tails Tales of a Tailless Dog Named Sagebrush, written by Joni Franks and illustrated by Raquel Rodriguez. A hiker and some little people named Shuns are stranded in a flooding river. The young ranchwoman and her dogs are the only people who can save the day. Who will they rescue first? This is a moral tale. Joni Franks’ story illustrates that all people, no matter how big or how small, are equally important. Humans and dogs and little people can work together to do the right thing. Raquel Rodriguez’s illustrations fit the action perfectly. Readers will enjoy meeting the Shuns, as well as the dogs and the young ranchwoman and the hiker.
