Everyone deserves a safe place to live, a place where they are loved. Even animals have a right to a loving home. So many pets are abandoned, abused, or worse. Some are lucky enough to find a fur-ever home, but not always. It’s so sad to hear stories about dogs waiting to be rescued. In Copper and His Rescue Friends by Pamela Atherstone, readers will learn the history behind some of the rescue dogs and cats. Copper describes his first home and the loving little girl who cared for him, but when she passed over the rainbow bridge, the rest of the family wanted nothing to do with him. He was a sad reminder of the little one they lost. Copper was dumped (quite literally) on a road outside of town, but he was rescued by Miss Lilly, a caring person, and taken to her home where she had other rescued animals. Copper shares not only his saga but those of his new friends and how they came to live with Miss Lilly.
Pamela Atherstone’s children’s book Copper and His Rescue Friends is a heartwarming tale. It is told in the first person from Copper’s point of view and it’ll have the reader fighting back tears to the end. Copper is a curious dog and he wants to know everyone’s story. What he learns from his rescue friends at Miss Lilly’s house is more than just hearing their touching accounts. Each is packed with important life lessons about tolerance, acceptance, family, and, most importantly, love. Hopefully, Copper’s tales will soften the hearts of young readers and teach them the importance of caring for their forever friends. Once you bring a pet into your home, it becomes a vital part of the family and should be loved and respected as such, not tossed out when things get difficult. These are powerful messages of love and endurance.
