Controlled Conversations by Karol Lagodzki is set in Poland during the Soviet era. Despite living in fear, many people are part of a resistance movement known as Solidarity. After high school, Emilia doesn't go to university but starts working at a telephone station with Frania. Part of their job is to monitor conversations and report anything deemed against the regime. Antek is the treasurer for Solidarity. He is the only one who knows where their money is, and that is why Major Roman is after him. Is he doing it for official purposes, or has he gone rogue? Emilia has two friends, Agata and Kalina. Kalina has huge secrets that astound her friends. How does the money for Solidarity end up in the unlikely hands of Emilia?
Once you start reading Controlled Conversations by Karol Lagodzki, there is no putting it down. With highly engaging dialogues and thought-provoking themes that evoke different emotions, there was never a dull moment in this book. The development of the characters was also remarkable, with each character playing a role toward a climactic end. I loved how Karol Lagodzki utilized suspense to great effect, which made one look forward to subsequent chapters. The vivid descriptions and the excellent narration also added to the overall beauty of this wonderful work. The book is also an excellent example of how citizens should behave when faced with bad leadership and governance. We all have a role to play in such situations. I look forward to reading something else by this author.
