Conflict is a work of adventurous science fiction penned by author Toby Weston and forms the third book in the Singularity’s Children series. Following the slow-burning plot development of Denial and Disruption, we find ourselves back in Weston’s cyberpunk world of exotic locales, pan-species relations and future tech as the cultures collide and find themselves on the brink of war. As the current political system loses relevance with every passing day, the old-fashioned thinkers are backed into a very dangerous corner. A new technology developed by Klan Fabs promises to solve everything and bring utopia at last, but perhaps the pull of annihilation is simply too strong to resist.
It took a little while to get into the philosophy and techno-speak of Toby Weston’s world, but once you’re in, the adventure is certainly both fascinating and absorbing. Weston has a superb imagination for the near future, drawing parallels with current political brawls and extending an inevitable kind of extrapolation of how humanity might lead itself to its own doom (which is scarily credible!). I enjoyed seeing different elements as the wide cast of character members each fight their own personal battles amid the turmoil. The ways in which technology has almost become cultural, with different people building their lifestyles around certain tech elements, was fascinating and totally original to read about. Overall, Conflict marks a definite cliff hanger in a conceptually fascinating series, building fans nicely right up to the point of destruction for the next book to follow on.
