After Rose ran off with Ian her family disowned her. Life with Ian was not what she expected; he was a drunk and a gambler as well as a wife beater. Ian was killed working in a mine in Nevada. At only nineteen, Rose was a widow with no money. She turned to the only profession that paid women - prostitution. One of her clients fell in love with her but he was married with two sons.
"Comstock Rose" is a well-written novel that accurately tells of those exciting days in the West just after the end of the Civil War. The main character Rose is totally believable and a woman of her times. She respects Ian's rights as household head even though he thinks nothing of beating her terribly and she wishes frequently that she could return to her family. Charlotte, Mattie, Molly, Ian, Gavin and all the other major and minor characters in this story are interesting and multi-dimensional. The plot runs smoothly and conventionally to the story's end making "Comstock Rose" a nice addition to reading lists everywhere.
