Come to the Water: Just for Today is a collection of Christian devotionals written by Sharon Hurkens. Hurkens is the Pastor, a Christian Speaker and a Life Coach with Shedaway Ministries. In this book, she presents 31 devotionals with topics ranging from Emotional Downloading, Slaying Your Giants and finding Fresh Manna for the Day, to Daily Steps for Trusting God. Each devotional begins with a passage from Scripture. It's followed by an in-depth analysis with cites and discussions of the various parts of the theme. Then, Hurkens provides a relevant prayer and a Life Application, which is an interactive reinforcement of the topic studied in that particular devotional.
Sharon Hurkens' non-fiction collection of Christian devotionals, Come to the Water: Just for Today, is a well-written and beautifully rendered compilation of devotionals addressing a wide range of topics relevant to Christians in today's world. I was particularly impressed with Facing Your Whitespace, the second devotional in the text, which guides the reader into understanding the value and opportunity implicit within those times when life and the future feels uncertain. She makes it easier to understand by employing the metaphor of white space in art. Like an artist, one should not feel intimidated or frightened by the white space, or blank canvases found in life; rather one should try to see that open area as a chance to create and glorify the creator. Her prayer gives a focus for those facing empty or bleak futures, and her Life Application is an interactive exercise in assessing one's white spaces and committing one's thoughts and feelings to paper in order to receive divine inspiration. Hurkens' devotionals are thoughtful and thought-provoking, and working through them will certainly gain the reader much peace and understanding of their faith, as well as their role in God's plans. Come to the Water: Just for Today is highly recommended.
