Come Quietly by Hermione Lee is a fantasy drama that follows the story of two sisters, Irina and Mallory, who become lost in the woods and find themselves trapped in a mysterious manor. Inside, they discover other children facing the same predicament, each with their own story about how the manor lured them in with its enchanting aura. The trapped kids struggle to trust one another, leading to rising suspicions and paranoia. Tensions escalate after a violent altercation results in a murder, revealing a sinister truth: the only way to escape the manor is for someone to die. This chilling revelation creates a desperate struggle for survival, resulting in conflicts and shifting alliances. Irina realizes she has everything to lose, especially her loved ones’ lives. She must navigate the treacherous dynamics of the manor while fighting to protect her sister and Kyle, a boy for whom she has developed feelings.
Come Quietly is a thought-provoking tale with a gripping plot. I enjoy Hermione Lee's writing because it offers a unique blend of horror, dark fairy tale elements, and morally challenging situations. In this story, she takes the classic tale of Hansel and Gretel and adds a modern, Halloween-themed twist. The book explores themes of survival, sacrifice, and truth, highlighting the darker aspects of human nature under desperate circumstances. The eerie atmosphere, combined with character-driven drama, invites readers to consider the lengths they would go to for survival and the moral implications of their choices. The narrative flows smoothly and is filled with unpredictable twists and turns that keep you engaged. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it to anyone who loves dark, twisted tales about love and survival.
