Super Speed Sam: Come Fly with Me by Monty J. McClaine is a short story about Sam, a basset hound with secret superpowers, and his human family, the McClaines. In this story, Sam has to come to the rescue of the youngest McClaine, Molly, and save her before she becomes a spider’s lunch ... all the while trying to figure out how Molly and he became flies. Can Sam rescue Molly in time and if he does will they forever live as flies?
Reading Super Speed Sam: Come Fly with Me made me feel as if I had been dropped right into the middle of a comic book or action cartoon. McClaine does an excellent job of painting a picture with his words and describing scenes. The story was fun, but a little complex for my 4-year-old to understand. So I recommend this book for ages 6 and up.
The only thing I wish that was different about this book was to see the illustrations a little larger. It is hard to see what is going on in the picture on a tablet without having to enlarge the picture constantly. However I did think the illustrations were cute and went with the story nicely.
I also really liked the way the story ended. McClaine has written several other Super Speed Sam books, but this is the first of his that I have read. I know a bunch of kids that will enjoy the Super Speed Sam series and I plan on introducing them to it.
