I wanted to be a scientist and go into space. I got my B.A. from Columbia University in Mathematics and Astrophysics and I worked at NASA on the Pioneer Venus Project as a programmer. I received my masters from U.C. Berkeley in Education of Math, Science, and Technology and went on to earn my doctorate in education. Coding Peter by Olga Werby is the exciting sequel to Suddenly, Paris in the Many Worlds, One Life series. While you do not necessarily need to read volume 1 to understand the sequel, I would highly recommend it as the series takes you on a wonderful journey with characters you will soon see as your friends. In this volume, Peter is the centre of attention, while volume 1 focused on his sister and how she became more than just an ordinary human by taking on half of her grandmother's soul. The human world is just one of many worlds in the universe of this series. And all of the worlds are nothing more than very complex computer simulations (think Sims on a different level). Paris and a handful of other beings from a world that has been destroyed after the Great Revelation (in which the beings of the world learned that they are nothing but a computer simulation) have made their home on Earth, as we know it. Peter's family is special because Peter's father is the son of one of the "aliens" and a human being. After Julie more or less successfully took over the soul of Bolorma, it is now Peter's turn to become special - but there is even more at stake now. His mother is in danger simply because she has been exposed to beings from another universe for too long, and only a special knowledge might be able to save her.
Just like volume 1, Coding Peter by Olga Werby is a fascinating read and I found it hard to put the book down. In general, I would recommend all books by the same author because she has an incredible imagination. I found this book special because I usually do not like it when the main character in a series changes. I was a bit worried that the change of focus from Julie to Peter - a teenage boy! - would not be that enjoyable. Fortunately, I was wrong and I enjoyed this book just as much as the first, and it was refreshing to hear Peter's thoughts on some of the events from the first novel. The plot advances at a rate that is comfortable and exciting to read i.e. you can relax with the characters, but at the same time you feel a certain sense of urgency to know what will happen. While the plot is obviously sci-fi, it is written in a believable manner. Fans of stories like The Matrix will love the series, but also other sci-fi fans will feel right at home. I hope to read more from this author in the future! A great plot, interesting characters, exciting conflicts - what more could you want?
