Clay House is a young adult horror story by Jordan Elizabeth. Much to her dismay, Tatiana and her family have just moved to the country, all thanks to her mom’s new husband. It doesn’t take long for her to learn that her new house is supposedly haunted, and there are a lot of creepy stories going around town about what has happened there in the past. Upon the discovery of a mysterious doll, Tatiana’s little brother begins acting strangely, interacting with people only he can see, and knowing way more things than he should. Her brother’s odd behavior only intensifies the outbursts of anger that her new stepfather is prone to displaying. With no one else to turn to, Tatiana’s home life is controlled by the fear of everyone around her.

With a unique combination of mystery, historical fiction, and the supernatural, Clay House is an unforgettable horror story. In classic horror story fashion, Jordan Elizabeth utilizes the belief that children are more sensitive to detecting paranormal activity, and she doesn’t disappoint. Tatiana’s little brother is one of the best examples I have ever seen of putting this belief to good use to create a character that is sure to send chills up your spine. Flashbacks to a previous era within the Clay House were my favorite part of the story, as it was interesting to see how the folklore and present events compared to and contrasted with the original events that took place within the evil atmosphere. Clay House is a must-read for horror story fanatics.
