City On The Cuyahoga River: A Collection of Inspired Thoughts by Marla LeNeo is a collection of poems divided into three parts. A collection of 104 poems, this is surprisingly hopeful, comforting, and calm. Each poem tells a story and allows readers to feel the emotions the author wanted to share. Instead of ramblings, we get simple and straightforward feelings, aspirations, hopes, and dreams of the author. Poems like Monkey Wrench, Housewarming Wishes, and I Know I’m Somebody all share the desperation a person feels when they are hopeless and a little desperate. All three parts reflect on different stages of her life, and in her words, readers find hope, faith, and courage to dream on.
My favorite section is part two very beautifully named In the Midst of Mahogany. I felt more connected to the poems. Opening with the emotive Beyond a Decade of Déjà Vu, this particular set of 36 poems felt like a gentle hug. Marla LeNeo explores the challenges of life, how every single moment has the capacity to change the course of our future, and the way we handle situations can make life either a blessing or hell for us. It is also about acknowledging our fears, facing them, and believing that we are enough. You can find strains of faith and religion in the poems, but they are not there as a theme. The author chooses her words carefully and considerably so that when readers go back to her poems, they form a connection with the author and feel their burdens lessen, even if just a bit. This is a phenomenal collection, one that I will cherish forever.
