"Chrysalis: Tribulations" by M L Lacy is the second in this excellent series, following on from "Awakening". Aubrey Marie, Bree, the Chosen One, grows stronger every day but besides still facing a huge threat from evil wizard Esmerelda, who has brought in a menacing assassin, she is also having to deal with jealousy and conflicts within her own clan. Bree is beginning to establish herself as a worthy Chosen One, fit to defend humanity, as she grows in confidence, but her path is by no means clear. Her status as Alpha female is challenged by clan newcomers. But ultimately she trusts her male protectors Steven, Bradley, Billy and Rick and has help and support from her family members and the shadowy Odessa, not to mention a pink crystal.
There is a lot of human interest in this paranormal book in the form of relationships and personality. Even the most minor of the secondary characters is rounded and interesting, if not necessarily likeable. Bree’s personality becomes more clearly defined and developed in this book as she becomes increasingly familiar with the magical elements in her life, and so do those of the other key players. We are beginning to understand how they work, but they still surprise us occasionally. This book has a large cast and at times there are a lot of names flying around, so you do need to concentrate. However, generally the author is well on top of things and keeps a tight control on her writing, pushing it in surprising directions at times. The plot is never predictable and here is a book which is hard to put down.
