A wonderfully odd world shows its true colors in Chronicles of the Drakyn War by Dap Dahlstrom. Wren was content with her simple life when an injured man appeared in front of her humble abode. Only Kodo is no man; he is one of the Drakyn. Drakyn, the foul-smelling and horrendous-looking reptilian creatures who have the ability to transmute. It is their odd infatuation with human behavior and culture that results in Wren being kidnapped and forced to work as a cook in the palace. Only this is where her story begins and where she realizes she is not as talentless as she once believed.
Chronicles of the Drakyn War by Dap Dahlstrom struck me as really unusual when I first started reading it. However, its unique lore and the world quickly grew on me. I became fascinated with the idea of transmogrification and the Drakyn , the backstory of the Gardlands, and the collections of primers. Dahlstrom has created such an amazing and fantastical world that managed to draw me into it in every way. I loved every bit of the story from the nitty-gritty to the harshness and the wondrous magic-filled eccentricities. The characters were also brilliantly written from Wren, who you can’t help but admire, to the head cook Teeka who you wish would just disappear. Each character you encounter in the book leaves a lasting impression and that feeling makes a book worth reading to me. I absolutely enjoyed this book and I look forward to any other works this author may write in the future.
