Chippy the Pilot is the first book in Stacey Blake's children's adventure series, Chippy's Amazing Dreams. Chippy is a young chipmunk who lives in a burrow with his mom and dad. One day, after he finished his chores and ate breakfast, Chippy went outside to explore. He enjoyed being outside in the morning and watching the birds and animals, but he especially liked to see what his favorite people, the Blacks, were doing. This morning, he noticed Mr. Black had a pair of wings on his jacket. Chippy got excited thinking that Mr. Black must be able to fly with those wings. He went home and told his mother about it. She explained that Mr. Black was a pilot and flew in an airplane. When Chippy took his nap, he dreamed that he was also a pilot, and he had lots of fun flying his plane up into the sky.
Stacey Blake's children's adventure storybook, Chippy the Pilot, is fun and inspirational. Chippy's mom says that he can be anything he wants to be when he grows up, including being a pilot, and it's a marvelous message for both the kids and those adults who are fortunate enough to get to read this book aloud. Simon Goodway's illustrations are marvelous -- they're brightly colored and richly detailed. I especially loved the artwork for Chippy's bedroom with his colorful bedspread, teddy bear and smiling caterpillar. Reading Chippy the Pilot made me smile, and that's a good thing for a kid's book. This book celebrates nature and the power of dreams, and it does both courtesy of a most amiable and adventurous little chipmunk. I'm looking forward to reading about his further adventures. Chippy the Pilot is most highly recommended.
