Chasing Love by Quang Ly is an interesting story about the difference between love and obsession, as well as the passionate and driving emotions that could cause someone to change their very lives in order to be with the person they love (or at the very least, have a very intense crush on). Unrequited love is explored, as is trust, passion, and a sort of dark determination.
Quang Ly's writing style was not something I'm used to, as there were quick scene changes and much inner monologuing, resulting in a few occasions where I was feeling a bit lost in the story and not sure how I got from one scene to the next. The aforementioned inner monologuing was very detailed and realistic, however, which really added a sense of compassion for the narrator. I definitely felt as though I were in the head of a very young person as they tripped over and struggled with the overwhelming feeling of their first love. It was even more heartbreaking to see the confusion and frustration of a breakup play out when it was so clear how much the relationship meant to the character.
This is a very quick read. I finished it in one speedy car trip from DC to NYC so you will have no problem doing it in one, maybe two sittings. Chasing Love will not change your life forever, but it is definitely a good read to take you away for an hour or two and remind you of those passionate and crazy first loves we all have out there.
