Robert Joncas' sci-fi thriller Changing Tides follows the journey of eighteen-year-old Skye Conner. Skye had recently lost her father in a tragic accident, prompting her to leave Phoenix for her Nana's home in the coastal town of Crescent Cove. With her mother losing her life to pills, Skye finds a kindred soul in Paul, her childhood bully. Meanwhile, she stumbles across a mysterious conch shell covered in vibrant colors. After Paul falls off a cliff and lapses into a coma, Skye somehow brings him back to life, only to discover that his body is inhabited by an alien entity. When the new Paul, Skye, and Nana take a road trip to Phoenix, Paul reveals the existence of the evil Bahlari on Earth, who seek their shell. Deep inside the Grand Canyon, the trio will now face the Bahlari and their wicked minions.
Robert Joncas incorporates a swirling mix of genres to craft a fascinating sci-fi tale that keeps you on the edge of your seat for most of the story. Changing Tides traverses science fiction, fantasy, horror, and mystery seamlessly, entertaining you with thrills galore. Joncas packs a lot of ideas and plot threads into an engaging storyline that keeps surprising you with a few well-placed twists that you never see coming. The narrative is fast-paced, which pushes up a gear or two during the final third of the book. Every scene featuring Nana, who I found to be quirky and eccentric, was a joy to read. Anyone who enjoys sci-fi horror thrillers will find plenty to love about this book.
