I really enjoyed Champion in the Darkness by Tyrean Martinson. I liked the straightforward battle between good and evil and the Judeo-Christian symbolism. I liked the young female hero who is well trained but as yet untested. Most of all, I liked the efficient way Tyrean Martinson tells the story without a lot of unnecessary words, thoughts, and emotion. Champion in the Darkness starts with plenty of action and drama, but Martinson doesn't draw each scene out until you’re tired of it so the pace is fast and I like that. This is a great novel, especially for young Christians if Mr. Martinson can find his audience and sell it correctly. Don’t get me wrong; just about any fan of action packed fantasy will love Champion in the Darkness but it will really resonate with Christians and Clara is a great, strong female role model.
Champion in the Darkness has all the elements of a good fantasy. A bad king, a good prince, an evil sorceress, and a people crying out for a champion. This can be an excellent series for young people and, in the hands of the right director, it can be an awesome movie. Tyrean Martinson has created a character that could become as famous and popular as Donald Covenant or even Harry Potter. I hope he does it. I, for one, would certainly like to read more. It’s rare to find an action packed series that is also just good clean fun. Great young characters, great older role models, and very bad villains. What more could you ask for?
